Yale watches over students abroad

Yale
See what ivy league schools are doing in the face of the catastrophes in the east.

After the democratic revolutions in Egypt and the earthquake and tsunami in Japan forced Yale to recall approximately 80 students and faculty members traveling this spring, the University is refining the procedures it uses to monitor affiliates studying and researching abroad.

The University requires undergraduate students receiving Yale course credit or funding to go abroad to register their trips with the Center for International Experience, and this year that system enabled administrators to establish communication with Yalies stranded amid demonstrations in Egypt and panic in Japan in a matter of hours, said Don Filer, associate secretary for international affairs. Over the years, growing numbers of students have opted to travel outside of traditional destinations in Western Europe, a MEDEX official said. The inherent risk of studying and working in developing countries combined with this year’s emergencies have both Yale and its contracted travel services provider MEDEX working to keep more complete records of their charges abroad, Filer and MEDEX representatives said.

“Significantly more” than 200 applicants for the University of Pennsylvania’s next freshman class have received “likely” letters, which let them know early that they will soon be offered formal admission, according to The Daily Pennsylvanian.

While the institutions of the Ivy League have mutually agreed to send out such correspondence for years in an effort to woo candidates who may have a range of college choices — sometimes those singled out are minority applicants, others may be interested in a particular field of science — Penn appears to have taken the process a step further this year.

Cornell Students Aid Protests at Ohio State University

Cornell_student
The Cornell Organization for Labor Action journeyed to The Ohio State University to join students in protest against proposed changes to the state’s public sector bargaining law last weekend.

In a 17-to-16 vote on March 2, the Ohio State Senate passed SB-5, a bill that, if enacted, would limit public sector bargaining to base wages and curtail the ability of county and municipal authorities to bargain with their employees.

Ohio Governor John Kasich defended SB-5 as necessary to balance the state’s $8 billion deficit, arguing it would help stimulate the state’s economy.

The bill, however, has drawn national criticism, as well as opposition from Cornell students and faculty. Members of COLA compared SB-5 to Wisconsin’s controversial SB-11, which also limits public sector bargaining.

The Ivy League Earnings Myth

Ivy_league_college
Do you need an Ivy League Degree to boost your resume? Find the answer here.

Do you need to graduate from an Ivy League school or other super elite college to earn the highest salaries?

Many families believe that graduates who can put Harvard University or Yale University on their résumé will fare significantly better financially than smart students who end up earning their degrees from elsewhere.

In a famous study, two economists tackled this question nearly a decade ago and concluded that Ivy League graduates did not enjoy an earnings advantage monopoly. And now the same economists—Alan Krueger at Princeton University and Stacy Dale at Mathematica Policy Research—have revisited the question with even more compelling data that has led them to an even stronger conclusion.

College Lobbyists, What’s Your Plan for Saving the Pell Grant Program?

Pell_grants
At issue are proposals in the president’s budget plan that aim to shore up funding for the program, which is facing a serious budget crisis even as demand for the grants continues to escalate.

The reactions that President Obama’s budget request for the 2012 fiscal year elicited this week from the college lobbyists at One Dupont Circle were entirely predictable. They applauded the president’s desire to keep the maximum Pell Grant at $5,500, but made clear -- in the most polite way possible -- that they would not support the means by which the administration would achieve that goal.

“It is clear that the administration has put a lot of effort and care into producing a budget that strives to protect and preserve student financial aid,” Molly Corbett Broad, the president of the American Council, said in a written statement. “While the higher education community does not agree with all of the choices made, we support the overall objective of ensuring a viable array of student aid programs anchored by the indispensable Pell Grant program.”
